LESTERVILLE, MO - The Upper Taum Sauk Lake Dam in southeast Missouri failed this morning, causing large amounts of water to move rapidly downstream.
Reports say people are missing.
The National Weather Service says at least one home along the Black River has washed away and a tractor trailer and some other vehicles were washed off a highway.
Officials warn that residents near Lesterville and south to a point west of Annopolis "will be vulnerable."
A dispatcher in Reynolds County says at least one person is unaccounted for, and that a family of five was rescued.
The dam is near Lesterville, about 55 miles west of Cape Girardeau.
The Associated Press reports that the dam failed after a night of heavy rain. However, weather was more than likely not the cause of the breach.
